Un dimanche à la campagne

A Sunday in the countryside

Have you ever seen the film un dimanche à la campagne. It’s such a beautiful film by Bertrand Tavernier. The film is set just before WW1 and is about an ageing painter who is visited by his son and free spirited daughter. It’s such a delight of cinematography, for years I have been wanting to own a copy of it and finally managed to find one online.

Each time I watch this marvel I just want to spend a Sunday under a shady tree, sipping delicious wine. With the weather being so beautiful I couldn’t have been happier when Côtes du Rhône and Native Feast sent me a picnic box, so I decided to recreate my own dimanche à la campagne – a Sunday in the countryside.

the perfect day for the perfect picnic

It all starts with a blanket… Something you can casually throw on the ground… You must equip yourself with at least one basket, and the best thing about picnicking at home is that you can use your lovely crockery….

Everything should be scattered elegantly, mixing food and wine; books are always really useful, especially to hold one’s glass!!! Finally a straw hat is essential, not just for the look but for the after picnic siesta, keeping sun and bugs at bay.

Now what was in our baskets…

the hamper.....

So we recieved our lovely box from Native Feasts, and I was so impressed by the quality of the food. The rillettes, a typical french preserve traditionally made from confit pork, were one of the best I have ever had, and I can tell you, I’ve had a few.

The charcuterie selection was just ideal and looked so perfect and authentic on our wooden board.

The bread was so  fresh that it was just like being back in France.

And that dessert! Oh my… a sultry British summer in a glass

And it all paired so well with the delicious Tavel wine, a classy and elegant Rosé wine from Southern Rhône Valley in France. Reine des Bois’ vibrant dark pink colour stood out perfectly in this beautiful setting… A true gastronomic picnic.

And now let’s cosy back inside to watch Un dinmache a la campagne…. indeed a perfect day…..
